A Child of Two Different Worlds
63
Ever since I was born
I’ve been a child of two different worlds
Two languages and two cultures
My parents being immigrants
Escaping the horrors of the war
Made their way from their homeland of Latvia
At the time separately one in a row boat and one on a ship
They made it to the German shore
Now most of you will agree
That Germany is a beautiful country indeed
But those were the days it was war torn and practically demolished
Cities falling while bombs whistled by
Nevertheless love prevailed and found its way through the dark
My parent’s married in a displaced person’s camp
Detmold the city was
Mom in her national costume
If nothing around them seemed as it should
Their smiles were real and shone bright
Then upon stormy seas they sailed to America’s shore
Steaming into New York Harbor
The only things that outshone
The glittering shine as the sun hit the Manhattan towers
Was the brilliance of the tears in the immigrant’s eyes
And so I was born
A Latvian product made in America
A child of two different worlds
I never regretted a thing
The chance to live and learn in two societies
Was the best for me
Since dad had long since gone away
To the stars in the heavens
He was reburied in his native soil
In Ranka where he was born
And mom lived out her days
In the city of Riga which she loved
And so this child from two different worlds
Found love and settled for awhile
In her parent’s homeland
But I’ve vowed however soon I can
That I’ll return to the land where I came from
Because I’m American born

What a sweet story. My great great grandfather is from Germany, and migrated to the States with two brothers. What a rich background you have. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Yes! Come home.
Lovely hub. You are always welcome back to the US. Thanks for sharing this. Great Read.
I really enjoyed reading about you and your parents. Very interesting. Have you ever been to the US? Loved the photos!

In answer to your wish, good words can be sold for money. We are still learning our way around. We may even figure out the rules before the game ends! Nice to get some background from one of my consistent followers. I try to return such favors. Thanks.
Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and interesting Gypsy. Wow, what a story. Your parents show "true love". I couldn't imagine getting married in those conditions Gypsy, unless I was in love. That is a powerful truth and I am glad you chose to share this beautiful story. We can't wait to have you back, I mean that:)
What a lovely poem, and story, Gypsy Rose. It makes sense that your poetry (what I've read) always has hope in it - you come from a family who found love and beauty and opportunities despite a difficult journey. This is a beautiful tribute to your homes and family; thank you so much for sharing it. Voted up and beautiful (and the photos are adorable!)

Great memories Rose. It's always amazing , and only few words can describe the look of loving parents and their kids , their joy or their sorrow, so easily transfers to the children . But either way happiness should always prevail , as I see it does in your case , no time for unnecessary selfish rage, or anger.
Stay truthful to yourself and true happiness must come. Blessings, and give thanks.
